Using the red stuff (heating oil) in diesel POVs
I've been thinking about this. Has anyone here tried it? What are the chances/consequences of getting caught?
It is a lot cheaper than the pump for sure. Last I checked, it was $1.75 per gallon. |

Wow, that's quite a difference. What part of the country are you in? Here in Oregon, heating oil prices are on parity with diesel fuel prices, at least they were last time I checked. Our last two homes were heated with oil; our new home (of 2 years) uses natural gas.

It should be cheaper because there is no road tax in it.....thus the red dye.
Some places are bad about checking for it, some aren't. But if they catch you with the dyed fuel in your vehicle, it's a big fine most places. |

How do they tell? Road use diesel is clear. Had a fellow who put some ATF in his diesel tank to lube the IP and was in a accident. The CSI's sampled his fuel as it was leaking all over the highway. He got busted big time, and spent way to much $$ to get the fuel tested to prove that it was ATF making it red. So it's your call. Of course after the baloon goes up it might not matter. |
